There are numerous makeup removers out there, all with different qualities for a range of skin types and lifestyle needs. We help find the right one for you.

 best makeup remover

All-in-one

Perfect for: Those with limited time who love to multi-task. Why go through three steps when you can do it in one? Having your cleanser and makeup remover in one really does cut down time and will have you ready for bed in a flash.

Try: Estée Lauder Perfectly Clean Triple Action Cleanser/Toner/Makeup Remover, $75, for an airy froth and squeaky-clean finish. New Zealand’s own Sávar also has an Essential Cleansing Lotion, $51 (guys can use it too!), that uses a light exfoliant and cleansing action to remove grime and makeup.

Waterproof

Perfect for: Those who can’t live without their waterproof mascara. A good waterproof mascara won’t budge through rain, sweat or tears; so a waterproof remover is a must.

Try: L’Oréal Paris Gentle Eyes and Lips Waterproof Make-Up Remover, $18, is a two-part concoction you mix together for best results. And Nivea’s 3 in 1 Waterproof Makeup Remover, $12, adds a little moisture so your face won’t dry out.

Tip: Soak a cotton wool pad with the formula. Press it lightly to your closed lid for at least 20 seconds then move the pad gently (don’t rub) from side to side.

Cleansing oils

Perfect for: Those with dry or oily skin. Oil-based products are good for oily skin too, as they remove excess sebum in your pores. Murad skincare founder Howard Murad says, “Many people are hesitant to put oil-based products on their skin for fear of clogging pores or causing breakouts. That’s a misconception. Even oily skin needs moisture; it just needs the right kind.”

Try: Nude Perfect Cleansing Oil Face & Eyes, $76; and Murad Renewing Cleansing Oil for Face, Eyes and Lips, $62.

Tip: Oil dissolves impurities in skin far better than water.

remover4

Sensitive skin

Perfect for: Those who are easily irritated by new products – especially around their eyes. Those who worry a makeup remover will leave them with a rash or with puffy eyes should opt for one that is a bit more natural.

Try: Dr Hauschka Soothing Cleansing Milk, $49, has protective properties to calm sensitivity and help diminish the appearance of redness while maintaining the skin’s natural moisture balance. Another great option is The Body Shop’s Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter, $30, which gently melts away makeup. It comes in a tin, allowing you to scoop out the amount you need.

Keep an eye out for: Micellar water

This is one of the ‘it’ products of the year and every model and makeup artist has a bottle with her at all times. This soap-free, alcohol-free product first gained traction among Parisians, who began using it on their faces instead of the city’s hard tap water. The concoction of tiny micelle particles is great as a makeup remover as it draws makeup, as well as sebum and impurities, from the skin. Apply it to cotton pads as a gentle alternative to face wipes. We’re loving Decléor Soothing Micellar Water, $60; and Avène’s Micellar Lotion, $45.
