CARA D’S AWKWARD TELLY INTERVIEW

Appearing on a US morning talk show this week, Cara Delevingne was accused of being in a bad mood as her dry, and frankly, very British sense of humour was completely lost on the anchors.

With a fail right from the outset (the news anchor addressing her as ‘Carla’) and the opening question suggesting the model-turned-actress wouldn’t have had time to read the book her new film, Paper Towns, was based on, the interview very quickly took a sour turn. Paper Towns author John Green stood by his leading lady, blogging: “[Cara] refuses to stick to the script. She refuses to indulge lazy questions and refuses to turn herself into an automaton to get through long days of junketry.” Meanwhile, Cara’s reaction: “Some people just don’t understand sarcasm or the British sense of humour”. She took to Instagram to get the last word in – posting a selfie, with the caption ‘I JUST FOUND THIS BOOK! ITS AWESOME!’

We’re definitely #TeamCara on this one – watch the clip below and decide for yourself:

SEPHORA IS COMING TO MELBOURNE?

Details are yet to be confirmed, but Vogue Australia reports Sephora is to open a store in Melbourne before Christmas 2015. Not quite on our doorstep, but close enough to get us in a wee tizz. See ya later, we’re off to book our flights!

JANE BIRKIN ASKS HERMES TO RENAME THE BIRKIN BAG

Her name has been attached to the Hermès brand for around 30 years, but Jane Birkin has asked the luxury fashion house to remove her name from her namesake Birkin bag. According to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Birkin watched a film about crocodile farms, which raised ethical concerns for the French actress around how the iconic bags are manufactured.

In a statement to the media, Birkin says: “I have asked Hermès to rename the Birkin Croco until they adopt better practices that meet international standards for the production of this bag.”

The bag is one of the most sought-after in the world and often requires customers to add their name to a waiting list, which can sometimes take years to move to the top of. Versions of the bag can be auctioned for up to NZD $300,000.

Hermès declared they are confident their suppliers are legit and released a statement in response: “Hermès respects and shares her [Jane Birkin’s] emotions and was also shocked by the images recently broadcast…Her comments do not in any way influence the friendship and confidence that we have shared for so many years.”

Interestingly, PETA has gone and bought a share in the French fashion house on the Paris stock exchange “in order to put pressure on the company to end its sale of exotic-animal skins”. Although the share is worth only around $450, this will give the organisation access to certain information and annual shareholder meetings.

WANT TO WORK IN THE NZ FASHION INDUSTRY?

If you’re looking to break into the New Zealand fashion industry, now is the time, with more talent competitions and partnerships running for budding fashion stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists, models and fashion designers than ever before.

The HITO Hot New Talent Competition is giving up-and-coming style stars the chance to impress industry insiders, with those shortlisted to the final 15 working alongside the pros at New Zealand Fashion Week. Fashion Quarterly’s editor Sally-Ann Mullin is one of the nine mentors along with industry stalwarts in hair styling and makeup artistry. If you think you’ve got what it takes to flourish when put under the fashion spotlight, then visit the NZFW website for more information on how to enter. Entries close at 5.00pm on Monday 3 August.

Westfield Fashion Collective is currently running a nationwide campaign to find New Zealand’s Young Budding Stylist. The winning candidate will work alongside leading fashion stylists Stephanie Rumble, Luke Bettesworth and Leonie Barlow over a 12-month period to learn the ropes, front key fashion events and kick-start their styling career.

Glassons is also jumping on board the fashion mentor train, giving Otago Polytechnic students a chance to receive feedback on their designs from industry experts. Already, two students have been tapped – one has received a one-month internship at Glassons, while another had the opportunity to showcase her style and designs through a Glassons Snapchat takeover. At the end of the year, one student will be awarded a one-year internship with the retailer. Glassons will also sell bags designed by the fashion students at their pop-up store during New Zealand Fashion Week this September.
